Blue-Eyed Computer Soul

I wouldn't believe it if I didn't dig it. When I read the reviews of renowned Laptop artist Jamie Lidell's new record "Multiply" being basicly a soul album, on Warp records nonethe less, I was stumped. Most of his catalouge is standard atmospheric, Four-Tet-esque computer sqeak and chirp material. After one listen I became a bandwagon fan. The comparisons to Otis and Stevie are nearly just. These two tracks represent the wide range on the record, and the distance from Lidell's previous catalouge. You should buy the entire album now, support this shit, it is remarkable that Warp would release this and I think you should make there gamble pay off. Smog Live

Hello everybody. I went to hear Smog at the Grand Emporium the other night, and it was a great show... the band Bill Callahan's currently traveling with is super tight, and sounds even better live than on recordings. Bill Callahan is tiny and adorable and does these weird galloping dance moves periodically... very strange, I tell you. But he's not fucking around about the show being over. When he says the show's over, the show's over. Even riotous applause, loud screams and lighters lit up drew only the soundman back to the stage to demonstratively remove microphones, as if to say, "You might as well cut it out now." But that's just as well. They played most of the songs off the new album, "A River Ain't Too Much to Love" as well as some old favorites I'd all but forgotten. Among them, a great love song... though I'm not so sure I'd put this one on a mix tape during the courtship phase. Or... you know, ever. If you have never heard this before, enjoy.

Another Green Eno?

With Eno's latest release being the first in 25 years to have the prolific producer back on the microphone singing and writing the tunes I thought it would be terrific to school the uninitiated on the wonders of Eno's early solo work. Even if your not familiar with his own music, most likely you've heard eno's "touch" in tracks by U2, the Talking Heads and many others. After he recorded Taking Tiger Mountain and Another Green World (which these selection come from) Eno went esoteric. I mean that in the best possible way, absolute praise. For someone who started his proffesional career in a Glam Band (Roxy Music) to becoming the king of pop, avant-guard, experimental sound and sound installation art is quite a feet. So here are two of my fav Eno tracks, one with vocals the other hinting toward ambient (he coined the phrase, duh!). This album and his new release are both available on itunes and amazon and your local record store (hopefully if they have any sense). Also checkout the kick ass interview in Arthur Magazine this month.

Roy Ayers Ubiquity Live

Okay so a recent review of a new unreleased Roy Ayers album called him the godfather of neo-soul, not to be picky but Ayers was a giant in so many diverse practices of Black American music from the 60's to the present. He successfully crossed over from straight ahead jazz, improve funk, disco, pop, 80's cheese and lately as a sideman for such massive contemporary artists like Guru and Masters at Work. All this from a vibes player? outta site. This cut is off of the first Ayers album I bought when I was a jazz headed lil teenager. Ayers band Ubiquity fly through many of the aformentioned genres, the contrast between soul disco and free jazz is compelling, plus you don't hear this cut too much. enjoy.
